A Queenslander reimagined for the next chapter

The Rollo Street Residence began with a very personal brief: to transform an existing Queenslander into a retirement home that reflected its owners, supported the way they wanted to live every day, and still felt generous enough for family, friends and celebrations.

The aim was not to create a house reserved for special occasions. It needed to feel just as comfortable on a quiet morning at home as it did with a table full of guests — somewhere to relax on the deck, enjoy the landscape, retreat at the end of the day and simply live well.

The clients’ love of nature became one of the defining ideas of the project.

Rather than treating the garden as something viewed only from inside, greenery was drawn into the experience of the house. A green wall and natural stone bring a calm, tactile quality to the ensuite, creating a private place to unwind away from the pace of everyday life.

At the rear of the house, the stair wraps around an existing flowering magnolia tree. What could have been a simple connection between levels became a much more memorable moment — moving through the tree canopy and giving the stair an almost tree-house quality.

Around the perimeter, established planting and new hedges create privacy in place of a conventional fence. The result is a softer boundary, allowing the home to remain connected to the street and landscape while still feeling protected and private.

The renovation also builds on the qualities that make the original Queenslander well suited to the Central Queensland climate. Shaded outdoor areas, natural ventilation and strong connections between inside and outside help the home remain open, comfortable and closely connected to its surroundings.

Throughout the design, views have been treated as part of the architecture.

Towards Mount Larcom, carefully considered openings frame the landscape like a changing artwork. Light, weather and the distant mountain shift throughout the day and across the seasons. In the lift lobby, a built-in seat turns what might otherwise have been a circulation space into a small destination — somewhere to pause, sit and enjoy the afternoon light and the view beyond.

The result is a home that feels distinctly personal to its owners: relaxed but considered, connected to nature, comfortable for everyday life and ready to welcome a house full of people.

More than a renovation, Rollo Street is about creating a home for the next stage of life — one shaped around the people who live there and the things they value most.
